Marching for the cure

Miranda Zeigler was a freshman at Northern High School who recently lost her battle with cancer. It wasn’t long before the school found a way to honor her and those in similar situations. Propelled by her memory, Miranda’s Marchers will raise money for cancer research at Dillsburg’s Relay for Life in June. Miranda, her marchers and others are a crucial part factor in finding a cure for cancer.
Miranda’s Marchers were quick to find a way to raise money. By creating the “Dude Looks Like a Lady” contest, students paid one dollar per vote to choose a male teacher to wear a dress throughout an entire school day. There was a tie between social studies teacher Mr. Mowery and English teacher Mr. Small, so they both wore a dress all day. The second place winner, math teacher Mr. Hager, got a special treat; he got to dress like a fairy.
Yes, it was silly, and it wasn’t a gigantic fundraising extravaganza like the Four Diamonds’ Polar Thon; however, the small things make a huge difference in the long-run when they are all added together. The girls who created Miranda’s Marchers and the other Relay for Life teams are all part of a giant team with the ultimate goal of curing cancer. If it was only the big events that raised funds, we wouldn’t get anywhere. This is a personal thank you to those girls and the members of all the other teams. If everyone works together, like with most things, amazing goals can be reached and so much more can be done. When June rolls around, even if you aren’t on a Relay for Life team, remember that every contribution counts and you definitely have something to give, whether it’s a donation or a skill that can help the cause because we’re all in this together.
In Loving Memory of Miranda Zeigler
