The importance of adjustment

With all this crazy weather that Dillsburg has been having over the last few weeks, the Northern High School Marching Band has had to learn to adjust quickly. Beginning the season with a new director is hard enough, but compared to Chapter Championships getting postponed to a Monday night due to rain and not marching in the Farmer’s Fair parade because of Dillsburg’s own monsoon that washed-out the whole fair altogether, a new director was hardly a problem. But all these changes in the normally static schedule of the band do not seem to be phasing anyone, for the show just keeps getting better as Atlantic Coast Championships approaches on Nov. 8.
Things do not always go according to plan; that is a fact that everyone knows. However, it is not simply that we all realize this reality that is important, but how we are affected by changes we do not expect at first. Adjusting to new situations and ideas is a skill that is learned quickly over the middle and high school years. Lockers are introduced first, but upon entering high school, students can use their lockers and carry their books to class, another change. In middle school, students start changing for gym classes and in high school, gym classes must be made up when they are missed because of absences. College is just a whole different animal where nearly everything must be handled by the student in hopes of creating a transition to adulthood.
These new experiences and adjustments are incredibly important for every student to undergo because without them a foundation and preparation for the curve-balls that adulthood will throw would never be constructed. It is vital that we all learn how to seamlessly flow from situation to situation and not get tripped by circumstances, or else we will not be as successful in life as we all hope to be. |
