Purple Haze
Taking advantage of the time we have

As the musical came to a close this past weekend, the most repeated phrase that could be heard among those involved was, “Yeah, it was fun, but I’ll be glad when it’s over.” Why do we feel that way when it comes to things we enjoy? I am no different; the first night that I didn’t have to go to musical practice was absolutely glorious, but I still loved my experience on stage with my fellow cast members. So why all this widespread relief after all the sets were torn down and props put safety away until next year? My theory is that there is a set attention span for teenagers and what we can deal with. We are creatures that crave variety, change and ruts lead to a lack of motivation. We love our hobbies and what we do for our own delight, but as the time runs long, some start to question their enjoyment.

However, just because exhaustion sets in, there is no reason why the joy that was there to begin with cannot always be present and this fact comes down to attitude. When practices stretch into the night hours and it seems to stop being fun, we all must remember what got us there in the first place and how we will miss all that time we spent doing our different activities after the last performance or the last sports practice. After high school graduation we will lose a lot of opportunities in which we can dabble in a lot of different activities and areas simply for pleasure. Therefore, I recommend that while we all have these opportunities we should take advantage of them and remember the joy we had while participating. With a good attitude, even long practices can become good memories that will last for a lifetime.
