The Northern High School Polar-Thon was held from March 19 to 20 after being pushed back from Feb. 26 to 27 due to snow. For all of you who don’t know about the Four Diamonds Fund and Thon, it is an all-weekend dance that is held at Penn State University to raise money for the Four Diamonds Fund, which helps students with serious cases of cancer. Northern’s annual mini-Thon, the Polar-thon, is held from a Friday night at 6 p.m. to a Saturday morning at 6 a.m. and tends to raise over $15,000 for cancer research each year.

This year, the Polar-Thon raised $18,500 for the Four Diamonds Fund through the efforts of the student body and community. To attend the dance, all students had to raise at least $30, but some went above and beyond. The two top raisers, Greg Dederer and Haley Kuhn, brought in $150 each. The night was filled with great activities such as a dance, a dodge ball tournament, use of the swimming pool and performances from a few local student and alumni run bands.

However, amid all of the fun there is an underlying message that stays fresh in the minds of all the students who attended the Polar-Thon: FTK, or For the Kids. This mantra is the motto of Thon, reminding everyone in attendance that what they are doing is solely and most importantly to help sick children and ultimately find a cure and through amazing charities such as the Four Diamonds Fund we all hope that someday that dream will be reached.
