Preparing for success
By Elizabeth Thomas

September 9, 2010

Now that the excitement and stress of returning to school has passed, it is time to get the year started with athletics and extra-curricular activities. As most of you know, the high school football kick-off was last Friday, Sept. 3, and as the date drew closer, many people repeatedly asked me, “Are you going to the football game? Are you going to the football game?” The enthusiasm began permeating the entire school, and despite the loss, most of the students and town fans are looking forward to cheering on the bears throughout the season.

Extra-curricular activities are preparing for another successful year. The “N”, our school newspaper, is back and already brainstorming new ideas. The music department is preparing for a surge of band tournaments and some students are excited to participate in the “national anthem project” once again. Be sure to stand up and applaud the talented students when they sing for you at our home games. Other clubs such as Key Club, Direct Call and Model UN are also anxious to get started.

Some of the seniors have their hands full as well. While some are loaded with classes for the entire day, others have taken opportunities with internships to get a taste of what they want to do in the future. From banking to vet care, it is interesting to learn the variety of positions available to willing students.|

As for me, I will have plenty to do this year in after school programs. Often I wonder how some students who do plenty more than me maintain good grades. I suppose most of it deals with managing time, which is a trick learned over the years, and also knowing your limitations. In any case, it seems like the students have much energy and effort to put into their activities, so we will just sit back and watch a glorious year unfold.
