Read the “N”

Extra-curricular activities are always popular at Northern High School. They give students a chance to participate in something related to their career choice, general interest or to simply have fun with friends. For those who enjoy writing, our school newspaper offers a taste of what it’s like to participate in a real publication. The “N,” as we call it, covers a variety of news stories and student interests such as Supreme Court cases, Facebook issues and sports.
The “N” has truly grown over the past couple of years. Last year, it was upgraded from a weekly 8 x 11 sheet of paper to a monthly four-page publication that covered much more in student life. Our previous advisor and English teacher, Mr. Fry, passed the torch to English teacher, Mr. Small, who has been excited to handle the paper thus far. Students involved with the “N” meet in his classroom to receive assignments for the month or bring up ideas of their own. Of course, everyone wants to write something for our back page, which is dedicated to providing students with hilarious spoof articles and our feature, “Dear Milo.” This spoof of an advice column has become a regular hit with the students and everyone is constantly buzzing about Milo’s mysterious identity.
What really makes the “N” such a wonderful paper is the amount of student involvement. Every idea put in each month comes from a student who felt that issue was important. Recently, there was a rumor that the “N” would be posted, gasp, online. This is due to the fact that most of the students don’t read the school newspaper, which is a pity since the articles have interesting topics to offer. Our newspaper staff knows that if the paper goes online, it will be read even less than it is now. Parents, please encourage your son or daughter to read the “N” and then ask them to bring it home so you can read it and get an even further idea of what students are talking about. |
