What are you thankful for?
By Elizabeth Thomas

Students at Northern were the happiest they have ever been on a Monday morning as they anxiously anticipate their six-day weekend. Even teachers seemed to be in a good mood - they are being lenient with the homework load.

Everyone seems to be in a happy mood when Thanksgiving comes around, and it’s not just because of the turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing, but because this holiday brings families together for one day to catch up and give thanks.

A tradition that continues in our family is that before we eat our big meal, everyone around the table says what they are thankful for. I always say that I’m thankful for family and friends, which seems like the obvious answer, but there is much more we could be recognizing. People do not know that for some, in this country, it is considered a gift to have items such as ovens, refrigerators, and televisions. We often take for granted even the simplest things, such as food and shelter, which some families in this world have trouble finding. This Thanksgiving, try asking everyone what they are thankful for and maybe even surprise them by bringing something to light that people wouldn’t normally think about. Of course, it’s still important to be thankful for family and friends, and I encourage everyone to cherish the memories you make together this season and throughout the years to come.
