The simple joys

Cheerful Christmas music played in the background as my family hung ornaments on the tree and recalled the memories that came with them. Later that night we sipped hot cocoa around the fire as I played the guitar and my dad sang at the top of his lungs. I couldn’t help but think that I didn’t have many of these special moments left. Soon I would be starting my own life and these Christmas traditions I’ve done since I was a kid would not happen anymore. It could be this simple fact that’s recently made me appreciate this time of year despite the usual pestering commercialism.
We often forget the spirit of Christmas by immersing ourselves in the sales and decorations. Students at Northern are already thinking about what to buy for their friends which only adds to the normal stresses of school. The truth about Christmas is that the expensive presents, blinking lights and ribbons are not nearly as important as the cheer and togetherness that comes with these occasions. When you open your eyes and see the simple joys, such as a father singing Christmas carols to his children or huddling in a blanket by the warm fire, you will know the true meaning of Christmas.
This year, create memories instead of stressing over lavish gifts. Brighten someone’s day with a cheerful “Hello” or “Merry Christmas” because even a smile can make a difference. Parents, treasure every moment with your children and teach them the importance of family because you never know how far they will travel when they grow up. Let this Christmas be a joyful one, for there is no better time for miracles and happiness. |
