Last week was spirit week at Northern High School concluding with a pep rally on Friday.

Spirit week is always a fun time for students because they get to dress differently for each day of the week. Monday was cartoon day, Tuesday was ugly Christmas sweater day, Wednesday was flannel day, Thursday was camouflage day and Friday was class t-shirt day with a pep rally during the last period.

Everytime spirit week begins, it seems the only people who know about it are the ones who planned it. Why is this? Is it because the dress code for each day isn’t announced properly, or is it because students are lacking in their school spirit? You would think the answer is a lack of communication, because what student wouldn’t want to participate in a fun week of dressing up? Yet as I listen to the buzz around me, it seems that people either don’t have the energy and time, or they just don’t care.

Northern High School is a fine, upstanding school that every student should be proud to attend. We often take for granted things like sports, art classes, and the musical, which some schools may not have. The least we can do for our school is show a little spirit and participate in activities such as spirit week. Some students think spirit is all about painting your face purple and white and screaming Northern at the top of your lungs, but that’s not everything. Participation can be in many forms, even if it’s just wearing a hideous sweater with a light-up snowman on a Tuesday.
