Purple Haze Highs and Lows
By Amy Kimmel

This week, like most, consisted of both high and low moments. Here are a few:
High:
Yearbooks have officially arrived and were distributed this week. This
year's book theme is "Uncharted Territory." The book highlights
Seniors, Clubs, Sports and Student Life. Class President Derek Myers
says in a note to the class of 2016, "No matter what we do in life, we
will always have a special place in our heart for Northern."
Low: This week
was the standardized Keystone Testing for Literature and Biology.
Lasting the majority of the morning, the mundane testing is unanimously
dreaded by students at NHS. Only certain students and grade levels
participated in the testing. For 2016 seniors, passing the tests is not
a requirement to graduate, but is slowly being implemented for grade
levels below.
High: On
Wednesday evening, over 40 juniors were inducted into Northern's
National Honor Society during a student-led ceremony. President
Annalise Armstrong delivered a heartwarming speech followed by the
delivery of the society's Fundamental Pillars by senior members of the
society. Students are selected based on academic record, character,
service and leadership. Membership in the NHS is one of the highest
honors that students receive. Tip for later: If you see students
wearing blue stoles at graduation, that means they are a member of the
National Honor Society.
Low: The
weather has been perpetually gloomy and rainy. making it difficult for
athletes to compete and more importantly for students to wear their new
spring clothes perfect for warm weather! (Isn't May supposed to be in
the 70s?) This weather really does dampen the mood.
Less than two weeks until prom and less than three weeks until graduation! Happy preparing!
