By Carolyn Kimmel

The Dillsburg Area Public Library will have a new home here on Mumper Lane, possibility by the end of the year thanks to a $500,000 grant.

____ Thanks to an impressive $500,000 Keystone Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the Dillsburg Area Public Library will have a new home – maybe even this year.
____ “It’s tremendously exciting news,” said Rex Bickley, library board president. “It will allow Dillsburg to have a new, modern library and a meeting space and parking will never be an issue.”
____ The board isn’t sure when they will receive the funds, which will be funneled through its municipal sponsor, Dillsburg Borough, but as soon as they do, they will move ahead to purchase the building on Mumper Lane from Holy Spirit Hospital for $750,000.
____ The library already has about $300,000 from its recent capital campaign, Bickley said as well as about $150,000 in equity in the current library building.
____ Along with the purchase, however, comes a challenge to the Dillsburg area community, Bickley said.
____ “The York County Library System has offered us $50,000 if we can raise an additional $50,000 of new money from the community,” he said. “This money will be used for renovating and equipping the new building.”

Promising to share ‘all that is still to come,’

18 couples renew their vows

Celebration is in the air as 18 couples prepare to reaffirm their wedding vows with the Rev. Roy Stetler, who pastors three Lutheran churches in the Dillsburg area – Emmanuel, Barren’s United Lutheran and St. John’s Franklin Lutheran. The idea for the service came from parishioner Elaine McCracken who had been waiting 30 years to pass on the blessing she had once received just days before her husband, Bill, passed away.

____ It’s been nearly 47 years since Wally Foreman first laid eyes on his wife, but he remembers it vividly.
____ “I can still see her coming down the steps of her house on Baltimore Street,” said the Dillsburg man, now 69. “She had on pink slacks with stirrups at the bottom, white go-go boots and a real nice blouse. I took one look at her and thought, ‘Why in the world hasn’t anyone in Dillsburg claimed this girl?’”
____ Foreman, then 23, claimed her then and, last week, he claimed her again at the altar of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Franklintown where he and Pearl, the girl he fell in love with on a blind date so many years ago, reaffirmed their marriage vows.
____ “I didn’t want to fall in love with her; I didn’t even want to go on the blind date! I had been on one blind date and I swore I’d never go on another, but there I was,” Wally said.
____ And to his surprise, she was exactly what he was looking for – “gentle, sweet, caring” with “perfect hair and clothing that all matched,” he said.
____ It was enough to make him give up his plans of being a sprint car racer and settle down to raise a family.
____ “She tamed me,” Wally said of Pearl. “You have to be a little cocky to be a race car driver because you have to believe you can win, but Pearl said ‘no race car driving. Yes, I gave it all up for her and I still remind her of it too.”

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP
Reflectors and sledding ban discussed

By Peggie Williams

____
Dorothy Ziegler, a Central View Road resident, came before the Franklin Township board of supervisors to question why she got an order to remove some reflectors along the edge of her property.
____Supervisors said there had been a complaint about the reflectors and they were in the township right-of-way so they must be removed.
____Ziegler told the board the reflectors had been there every winter for almost 50 years and she said she had been told by a long-retired township road master to place them there so the snow plows would not destroy her yard.
____Supervisors gave her some more time to remove the reflectors since the ground is now frozen and the task might be difficult if not impossible, but they refused to tell her who lodged the complaint.

Polar Bears finish at 14-0!
By Joe Guty

The Northern boys eighth grade basketball team finished the regular season undefeated.  On Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Seventh Annual Northern Junior High Basketball Tournament, they defeated Gettysburg 31 to 18 in the consolation game. In photo, Northern's Nik Kozain drives around Gettysburg's Logan Carbaugh in the first quarter of play.

____With a 41-35 win over Big Spring last week, the NMS Boys Jr. High Varsity Basketball team completed the 2014-15 regular season with a perfect 14-0 record. On the road against the Bulldogs on February 12, Northern also improved their league record to 12-0.
____The Polar Bears, looking to finish the season unbeaten, played a closely contested first half as they led 3-2 after the first quarter and 18-14 at the half. Northern struggled shooting the basketball going 6-27 from the field in the first half, but defensively they played well enough to keep themselves in the game. The Polar Bears came out strong in the 3rd quarter to take a 32-23 lead going into the 4th quarter and looked to be pulling away from Big Spring. However, the Bulldogs came out strong and cut the lead down to two points with 2:30 left in the game.
____The Polar Bears needed a driving layup and the foul by Bobby Skinnell to put them up by five points--which gave them the push they needed to pull off the victory. Northern finished off the game to secure the 41-35 win. Chris Barrett with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Ryan McGill with seven points, nine rebounds and five assists paced Northern. Dan Leitholf added seven points and had three steals, and Christian LaRosa contributed two points, four rebounds and two assists.
____At home on February 11 against Cumberland Valley, Northern prevailed 42-30. The Polar Bears had beaten CV earlier in the year in a close 26-22 battle, and the Eagles were looking to return the favor at Northern Middle School. The Polar Bears came out in the first half with a purpose and took control of the game. Northern’s aggressive defense held Cumberland Valley’s offense in check on the way to a 19-10 halftime lead, giving up only one point in the 2nd quarter.

Notebook: Northern, Blaschak benefit from Wild Cards

Jake Koser, left at 152-pound weight class.

____ Northern wrestling coach Josh Murray needed to touch base with two of his wrestlers on the morning following Saturday's Section 1-AAA Tournament.
____ Murray needed to inform one wrestler, Mitch Wagner, that his season was over.
____ Then came the more enjoyable part -- telling Owen Blaschak that he's going to districts.
____ Wagner and Blaschak were each fourth-place finishers at sectionals and traditionally, only the top three wrestlers advance. But this season, thanks to the trickledown effect of the newly-expanded PIAA brackets, there was a chance for four wrestlers to advance from sectionals at any given weight class.
