National Night Out
Good steady crowd attends, event cut short by rain

National Night Out began with sunny skies Tuesday evening at Logan Park, but was cut short by a rain storm an hour and a half early. Hundreds of attendees, however, did get a chance to support the community from 5 to around 6:30 p.m.
The event was hosted by the Carroll Township Police Department and is celebrated across the country on the first Tuesday in August to give residents and visitors a chance to interact and meet the community, according to the police.

Wellsville Borough
Chickens on the loose: Existing ordinance will remain in place

Wellsville Borough will not have a chicken ordinance restricting free-roaming fowl—the existing nuisance livestock ordinance will have to do. Nor is it likely the borough will have a noise ordinance, aimed primarily at Pennex Aluminum and Weaver’s of Wellsville, because those businesses would be grandfathered in from new restrictions as both are existing concerns.
The only approved measure during the 90-minute, often chaotic meeting was a resolution approving the same emergency operations plan that was unchanged from the previous two years.

Logan Meadows: Phase three underway

Dillsburg residents who frequent Ore Bank Road are daily observers of the ongoing construction in the
most recent phase of Logan Meadows, which sits on the west side of Ore Bank Road. According to Gary
Reihart, the approval process for Phase three of the development began in 2005. Ground was finally broken in 2023. This phase will include 39 homes to be completed sometime next year.
Reihart who is a York native, followed in his dad’s footsteps with a career in real estate. Eventually he began buying, selling, and developing land. In 1977 he purchased the Homestead and Logania farms, 420 acres, in Dillsburg.

Polar Bears ready for the 2024 fall season to begin

With the new 2024-25 school year right around the corner, hope springs eternal for the Northern sports teams who begin official PIAA practice on August 12 for the fall season. The Polar Bear football team began heat acclimatization practice on Monday, Aug. 6. The golf teams also begin official practice. And every squad begins with a “perfect” 0-0 record. There is also cheerleading, color guard and band practice that will begin in earnest in the next two weeks. Regardless of the school activity, many have attended summer camps and diligently practiced on their own or with teammates. The Dillsburg Banner sports specific previews will run over the next few weeks. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the programs and schedules.

Golfers to compete in McCurdy Tournament

The next Range End Men’s Golf Association golf event is the Bill McCurdy Mixed Two Man slated for this weekend, Saturday/Sunday, Aug. 10- 11 followed by a Gross/Net tourney on Sunday, Aug. 25. The Bowman Two-Day Net is on Saturday/Sunday, Sept. 21- 22 and then the REMA Cup on Saturday/Sunday, Oct. 5-6.
For the second week in a row, Chris Heisey won the Range End Thursday Night Individual league title. Posting a 35, Heisey finished one stroke ahead of James Watts (36). A large group at 37 included Craig Charles, Tyler Follmer, Todd Smeltz, Matt Lehman and Steve Borowitz. Jake Apicella shot 38 to complete the leaderboard.

Twilight Baseball: Stoverstown Tigers crush Cardinals, 24-10

Holding nothing back last Saturday, August 3, the Stoverstown Tigers crushed the Mechanicsburg Cardinals, 24-10 and moved to the top of the York Central League standings at 20-5-2. The Cards dropped to second place at 19-6-2. Against Mt Wolf on Monday, August 5, pitcher Justin Charles allowed three runs on six hits as the Tigers cruised to a 9-3 win. Charles pitched a complete game over seven innings and struck out six batters. He allowed no walks as he improved his record to 8-2.
Former Northern H.S. and South Mountain Sox star Tyler Yohn and his Jefferson teammates edged Mt. Wolf, 5-4 on Thursday, August 1. Jefferson improved to 15-12-1 and are in fifth place in the league.
